Description
Sons of Gallipoli tells the story of passionate individuals dedicated to preserving the message of peace and memory. In this interactive documentary, two mothers, descendants of soldiers from opposite sides of the battle, vow to see who still remembers the fallen. Instead of the usual talking heads and archive footage, we learn the lessons of Gallipoli through innovative storytelling techniques, immersive maps, and a vast interactive library of rarely seen historical assets.
Execution
Instead of the usual talking heads and archive footage, the lessons of Gallipoli are demonstrated through innovative storytelling techniques, immersive maps, and a vast interactive library of rarely seen historical assets.
Some 80 people were involved in the production, including top English- and Turkish-speaking Gallipoli scholars, as well as an international documentary production team. Research and film production took place in Turkey, the UK and Australia.
We enhanced the linear documentary with a nonlinear approach to storytelling, using advanced design and technology. From concept to completion, development took 8 months.
Outcome
Sons of Gallipoli garnered almost 400,000 views and led to the opening of a permanent installation which opened on the battlefields of Gallipoli March, 2016. Tens of thousands of visitors from around the world will experience the installation -- from historians, history buffs, students, locals and descendants -- and pay tribute to those who fell in battle over 100 years ago.
