OVERVIEW

Description

The film observes Lakshmi, a typical 8 year old girl from an Indian village, on a journey that she has to undertake every morning. She has to brave dangers and annoyances along the way; wild animals and reptiles, bad weather, miscreants and lecherous men waiting to prey on little girls like her. But she has no option but to go on. And because it’s dark and the girls are afraid, these girls usually count aloud their steps. Doing so keeps them preoccupied until they reach their destination and also dispels the deafening silence. It’s their little game. This journey is embarrassing, dangerous and humiliating. It’s Lakshmi’s daily walk to an open place, sometimes all the way on the outskirts of her village, only so she can relieve herself. Because neither her home nor her village have adequate sanitation facilities. Milions of girls and women like Lakshmi are devoid of this basic human right that we take for granted. The film ends as Lakshmi’s journey comes to an end, with the message that the advertiser Dabur, manufacturer of the Sanifresh brand of cleaning liquid, will contribute part proceeds from all sales to build and maintain toilets for girls like Lakshmi.
