Background

A Perfect Planet is a new landmark Natural History programme from the BBC, which tells the incredible story of the forces that sustain life on our planet: Volcanoes, The Sun, Oceans, Weather and Humans.

For the launch at BBC Showcase, BBC Studios needed to create an unforgettable evening event that captivated international buyers and filled them with excitement for this incredible new programme.

Idea

We transformed the vast floor space at the Liverpool arena into an immersive experiential event that revealed the awesome power and fragility of the natural world.

The evening thrust excited guests up close and personal with the forces from the series as they experienced nature like never before; using live performance and the latest technology to bring them face to face with erupting volcanoes, torrential rain and vast thunderstorms.

Sustainability is a key theme in A Perfect Planet, so we made sure the evening echoed this strong environmental message. Every detail was considered, even down to an entirely vegan menu.

Strategy

In a world where brands are constantly fighting for buyers’ attention, it’s imperative to offer something bold and unexpected to stand out from the crowd. Our strategy was to let buyers experience the incredible forces from the series’ first-hand; creating a truly memorable event that created buzz and drove sales. This would be a premium event, that revealed the ambition and scale of the A Perfect Planet, while subtly explaining the details of the series.

It’s vital buyers emotionally connect with content and what better way to do this than by immersing them in a world where they can experience the tastes, smells and sights of the natural world in an entirely unique way?

Using live performance, specially filmed sequences, bespoke themed menus and more, we brought the outside, inside, for an event that tantalised the buyers’ senses and created an unforgettable night, which drove sales around the world.

Execution

On arrival, the guests were dazzled by an installation representing our planet and their senses enlivened with the sights and smells of flora and fauna from around the world.

Then like a force of nature himself, Attenborough guided the audience on an incredible journey. The 37m x 7m LED screen treated guests to stunning 8k animations, visualising each powerful force from the series.

To enrich the experience, we brought the outdoors in, by creating a thunderstorm and rain display revealing a rainbow either side of the screen, and an explosive volcano erupting with pyrotechnics. The incredible visuals were paired with a sustainable vegan menu that reflected each step of the evening’s journey.

For the finale audiences were captivated with a preview to the trailer, coupled with a live rendition of the campaign track and concluded with a specially shot message from Sir David urging us to preserve our Perfect Planet.

Outcome

For everyone present, this was a truly magical event that balanced the poignant message recognising the fragility of our world, with an evening of pure joy. The feedback was like nothing we’ve seen before, with the event constantly being named as a festival highlight and key driver of sales.

The figures were extraordinary, with all key territories, including China, Germany and the USA snapping up the rights. This means A Perfect Planet and its essential environmental message reached an audience of millions around the world.
