Background
The ‘Act For Early Years’ campaign had to persuade adults to act. It had to reach teachers, parents, community leaders, celebrities, experts and world leaders. Specifically, it had to stand out at the 2023 United Nations General Assembly where Theirworld gathered international leaders, businesses, and activists. It also needed to be flexible enough for the small communications team at Theirworld to create impactful assets for use across multiple applications.
The solution was to give children a big, loud voice. So we made a real font. Kids across Kenya, Ghana, and Scotland drew wonky letters and scribbles that we digitised into a real, functional font family which can be uploaded and used like any other font. So now you can scribble across pdfs and PowerPoints in the voice of a child. All these smooth, polished pages disguise the fact that nothing is happening. Now you can shout on the page.
Execution
We helped the children to make a font. The branding device is a font - 'Can U See Me' - created by young children in Kenya, Mozambique, Ghana, South Africa and Scotland. We digitising their wonderful random alphabet and number characters into a font, including backwards letters, doodles, and scribbles. The existing 'child's' typefaces are all too crafted, like adults impersonating children's voices. This font joyfully ignores all the rules, with no punctuation, random kerning, and not following a baseline. It mimics the wonky charm of children's handwriting. The children's font can be installed and used like any other. In Powerpoint it can typed directly into presentations. So it is in use every day. The style is unique and unmistakeable: on a taxi side, a billboard, or messily scribbled across an email in your in-tray. "When you use the font and start typing, it’s like another voice.
