OVERVIEW

Description

The American Express® Pro Walk was an immersive, mixed-media experience that provided US Open fans the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a pro—feeling the same physical and emotional journey a player would have as they walk from the locker room onto center court at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

By combining physical sets, live-action theater, 3-D sound, holograms and hidden cameras, fans experienced the US Open from a perspective they had never seen before. Walking through an authentic recreation of the players’ locker room, they met holograms of tennis legends Pete Sampras and Monica Seles. Passing through the media tunnel, they encountered an eager press corps who bombarded them with questions. Finally, they entered a 24-foot interactive, projection-mapped dome that made them truly feel like they had stepped onto center court to simulate serving for US Open glory.

Execution

The American Express® Pro Walk was located inside of the US Open American Express Fan Experience on the grounds of the National Tennis Center. All fans were invited to experience the Pro Walk throughout the entire tournament from 8/28/16–9/11/16.

Highlights:

• A total transformation of 2,500 square feet into a fully immersive, mixed-media experience that gave fans the opportunity to see and feel what it’s like to walk in the shoes of a pro.

• Fans walked through an authentic recreation of the player locker room, featuring holograms of tennis legends Pete Sampras and Monica Seles.

• Featured a 360-degree digital recreation of Arthur Ashe Stadium projection-mapped inside a 24-foot dome.

• Live public address announcer introduced fans as they stepped onto the court and saw themselves on the jumbotron.

• Personalized takeaway videos allowed fans to share their experience with their social networks.

Outcome

Over the two weeks, the Pro Walk became the “must-see” on-site experience at the US Open, entertaining more than 5,000 visitors and generating 574 million earned PR Impressions. It was covered by major media outlets, including ESPN, CNN, Forbes, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, CBS NY, CNBC, The New York Post, Rolling Stone, NY1, Yahoo, Chief Marketer and AdAge.

Additionally, the scale of the Pro Walk was extended beyond the grounds thanks to personalized takeaway videos featuring commentary from Pete Sampras and Monica Seles, which were created for each participant to share through their social channels.
