Background

Trans people are not a new phenomenon. Trans identities have existed for millenia across all global cultures, occupying positions of power and mystique. However, trans identities became marginalised and erased from history.

Today trans erasure still continues with the highest on record transphobia incidents coming from media, from right-wing groups and from within the queer community and Government apathy.

The recently formed LGB Alliance has called for Trans people to be removed from LGBTQI. It was one of the first times in recent history that an exclusionary movement was gaining mainstream traction. This synched with their application for Government funding. If LGB Alliance was to be successful, it would setup a template of hate for others to follow.

With this rising anti-trans sentiment focused on exclusion, Amplifund (established to support LGBTQI activists) wanted to motivate mass support, get people talking and put a stop to LGB efforts to erase them.

Idea

The idea of the campaign is to remove the letter ‘T’ from a range of different texts and communications - showing that when you erase a letter from any word or sentence, in any language, you remove both the comprehension and the unity behind it - and the same is true when you remove the T from LGBTQI+.

‘Incomplete Without The T’ was a direct response to increased transphobia and hate around the globe, and aims to showcase that if you erase the letter T from any word it won’t make sense – just like removing the T in LGBTQI+.

It also raised questions around the erasure of trans people from humanity, and how removing an identity jeopardises the entire fabric of society – just like removing the T from the alphabet.

The campaign was launched during Transgender Awareness Week to a live audience of celebrities and LGBT+ allies.
