Leon Löwentraut translated the UN Global Goals into art. In addition to a worldwide exhibition, his 17 paintings were to be published online. The objective was to design a digital art gallery that’s more than an Instagram clone but an actual experience.

'Art4GlobalGoals.com' is an interactive art gallery with 17 paintings by Leon Löwentraut supporting the UN's development plan. To discover the paintings, visitors must cross out problems with digital brushes. The objective was to use these brush strokes to further raise awareness for the Global Goals.

The Idea: a collective, eighteenth painting – created by an algorithm from the visitors’ original brush strokes: "Piece 18 - The most beautiful petition in the world".

Therefore we created an algorithm to compose "Piece 18" from over 131,000 brush strokes. It was printed on canvas and will now travel through art galleries worldwide alongside Leon's 17 paintings.

After over 1,000 paint simulations our algorithm created incredibly natural-looking paintings, using human-made brush strokes and simulating real paint with features like colour blend.

Each brush has a colour representing one Global Goal. They also feel incredibly realistic with natural flow, decreasing paint and distinct rawness – perfectly imperfect.

The texture feel of real paint is achieved by stamping thousands of tiny stamps which fragment and disperse towards the edge of each brush stroke.

The mixing of paint when two strokes interact is achieved by for each paint stamp, asking what colour is beneath it and merging the two colours depending on closeness to the stem of each stroke.

Only a few weeks after launch, people made more than 131,683 brush strokes against the world's problems. We developed an algorithm to turn these brushstrokes into "Piece 18" – the most beautiful petition in the world, that will now travel through art galleries worldwide alongside Leon’s 17 paintings.
