OVERVIEW

Background

In a time of social media echo chambers and inadequate information in the mainstream media, it’s often difficult to find alternative views and provocative ideas.

BBC Select is a new streaming service that sparks imagination and challenges views. A curated SVOD platform to elevate the worlds conversation, offering world-class documentaries and content on culture, politics and ideas for the US and Canadian market.

Its mission is to reveal differing perspectives and reframe people’s view of the world with a range of intelligent content that lets people draw their own conclusions.

It was vital for us to convey the uniqueness of the service and make sure our brand stood out in an ultra-crowded SVOD market.

Idea

Using the line, ‘A world of fresh thinking. In one place’ we introduced BBC Select as a single destination for an eclectic range of ideas and content. A home for people who are open to the new and are ready to embrace multiple opinions.

Every BBC Select touchpoint reveals a range of perspectives, using content to bring together multiple ideas in one place.

Taking cues from editorial design, we transformed the classic masthead from a static, one-way piece of communication into a starting point for discovery, which animates to reveal new perspectives and unexpected connections.

BBC Select is a modern BBC brand for the digital age, with logos and design assets created to work on all platforms and crafted to work at all sizes. It’s design mirrors its ambition to highlight the fresh and interesting.

Execution

We created a flexible brand system that creates a space for the best content and brightest ideas to come together in one place, as well as being built to flex seamlessly across all digital destinations.

The design features a modern interpretation of editorial style. Our digital masthead is the heart of our brand and a catalyst for revealing and juxtaposing different content. Like the brand itself, it celebrates the previously unexplored and unexpected connections between ideas.

Our identity leverages the power of the BBC but also recalibrates it, with a distinctive, modern design that has genuine impact and cut through on digital streaming services and beyond. The typography is bold and confident, and the striking and distinctive highlighter colour echoes the intention of our service to select and surface world-class content and ideas.

Outcome

We were blown away by the success of BBC Select’s launch and the overwhelmingly positive response from subscribers about its look and feel. Online, we delivered over one million impressions in the first month, with over 100,000 social video views, leading to significant traffic to the brand website.
