Description
We’re surrounded by amazing things everyday but, somehow, we’ve become a nation of cool cats – blasé, nonchalant, aloof and cynical. We’ve lost our enthusiasm and curiosity. Life would be so much more fun if we took a leaf out of the dog’s book. Dogs find everything amazing, even slippers.
Execution
Visual effects company completed the VFX on the ad, helping to hold casting auditions for a cat & dog, who needed to be shot separately, but look and move as similarly as possible. A green screen test to ensure the animals would perform was conducted ahead of tweaks to the script based on the dogs’ best movements and tricks. The dog was shot first, and the VFX team had to meticulously record lighting references for each shot, as well as capture 360 degree camera footage of each location. Matching the cat’s head in the studio was a game of patience as he didn't always co-operate and it was imperative for the shots to line up in the mix and overlay. Visual effects company's compositing team tracked the head onto each shot. Then the simpler, less VFX- heavy shots were a case of time-warping the cats move to match the dog or vice versa: warping the neck to line up the plates, patching bits of fur to cover the joints, grading the two plates and recreating the head shadows and lightening where highlights should be. To give a sense of movement to the cat, who was filmed motionless (while the dog was on the move) we animated the facial features using spline warps. The frisbee shot required rig removal from the team, allowing the dog to jump using a harness and pole. Every shot in the commercial was planned and supervised meticulously, so when it came to compositing everything fitted together like a jigsaw.
