OVERVIEW

Idea

General Motors requested unique visualizations to control a host of new technologies available in the all-electric Cadillac LYRIQ, in-car human machine interface (HMI) that operates as part of the architecture of the machine.

Through close collaboration, sophisticated UI was developed to operate seamlessly and allow driver and passenger(s) intuitive access to key functions such as media and entertainment, navigation, parking assistance, and ADAS applications.

Primary UI is featured on advanced LED display technology, a virtual 33” curved dashboard enabling contextual control of key LYRIQ operations. This in-vehicle cockpit with digital instrument panels can be personalized as per the user’s requirements to manage vital driver information.

The use of real time render engines allows for instantaneous connection to functions including climate and seat control, speed, fuel level, trip, and air vent control. UI also notifies drivers in case of distraction, improving safety.

Execution

UI is integrated into the architecture of this all-electric two-row SUV, featured on an opulent 33-inch LED screen that serves as both instrument panel and infotainment system. The refined minimalist design offers an elegant user-experience that also celebrates the heritage of the Cadillac brand.

Brand Relevance was vitally important with Cadillac being among the first automotive brands ever created in the world. Their vehicles are at the top of the luxury field. LYRIQ required the most advanced UI design possible to control complex in-car tasks with both ease and efficiency.

In collaboration with Cadillac designers, we embraced a visual strategy to recognize the iconic luxury automaker by using bold and beautiful UI to control a suite of on-board technologies, implementing specific designs that not only compliment the automaker’s luxury ideals, but also engage consumers who need to feel comfortable and safe on the roads.

Physical touch points were created, primarily on a vast 33" curved LED screen using real-time technology allowing interface controls to work seamlessly with input tasks.

The design project was complex, taking ten months to create an appropriate and functionally designed UI. Placement is on an immense scale, putting our design work within every LYRIQ as it rolls off the assembly line.

Style elements and design choice ideas were further amplified by previous experience in motion design for top tier directors including Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, and Alex Garland. Our interactive designs are featured on monitors, visors, HUDs, and 3D environments in films such as The Martian, Ex Machina, Ad Astra, and the Avengers franchise.

Such design work for future world technologies allowed us to push the creative envelope for GM and use an expressive approach to designing appropriate UI for cutting edge technologies offered in the LYRIQ.
