Description

"Fireship” is the final chapter in a trilogy of commercials for Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. The trilogy concludes as Captain Morgan and his crew makes the ultimate sacrifice in the name of adventure.

Execution

It was a massive undertaking for a shoot that had only eight full complement days in Spain and nine, using a one-fifth scale Spanish Galleon, with a miniature unit on the paddock tank at the studio.

The ship, the ‘Andalucia’, was moored in Palma harbour, where on-deck scenes of both the Captain and his nemesis Don Alonso were shot, and the dramatic beach of Sa Calobra was used as the backdrop for the bay and arch - which was all created through CG and matte painting. A third boat set was constructed in a green-screen studio in Palma where Alonso meets his fiery end.

A second major phase of the shoot was the filming of a fifth scale miniature ship in the studio. This was dressed to be the Captain's pirate ship, then redressed to become Don Alonso's boats. VFX Supervisor and the studio team created the astounding naval scenes in Master and Commander.

We shot for nine days straight matching countless angles from the existing edit cut from the Palma footage. When you see wide shots of the ships in this spot it’s not CG and it's not a full size plate, it's a miniature. The outdoor tank plates would only work if the light was flat.
