Execution
During the whole week ESPN TV hosts promoted Twitterball saying that it was going to happen during the halftime of the Champions League semi-finals.
Via a hotsite, fans access Twitter and choose the teams they want to play for. (i.e: Real Madrid or Borussia Dortmund) the teams are the same ones playing on ESPN.
In the game every tweet is a kick and people choose which way the ball goes by tweeting North, South, East or West.
The game lasted as long as halftime and before the 2nd half started, the fans behind the goals appeared on ESPN.
Outcome
+ 75,000 people played Twitterball during Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund halftime.
Due to heavy Twitter activity at halftime, some people got aware that a game was taking place at ESPN. 2nd half had a 2% bigger audience than first.
Since the mechanics of the game take place on Twitter, the hashtags North, South, East and West became Trending Topics in Brazil during the game.
The project went so well that it will be used in the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014.
As the most important result: lots of players on the sofa appeared as heroes on the ESPN screen.
