OVERVIEW

Description

The food franchise Nandos became the first brand in South African history to contest a general election when it registered as an official political party and campaigned in the 2004 South African Parliamentary Elections.

Execution

First we registered Nandos as a genuine political party with the Independent Electoral Commission. We registered N.A.N.D.O.S. as the New African National Democratic Organisation for Solidarity (a pastiche of most of the political parties in South Africa)Secondly, we launched the party with a traditional town hall meeting and invited journalists and our supporters. We then ran a traditional political campaign of street pole posters and radio adverts (South African political parties are not allowed on television). Political parties are allowed to erect street pole posters for free - we thus created a legitimate free outdoor advertising space for Nandos.
