Description

A typical casting session is held for the role of "Dad". The various actors run the gamut of experiences one has as a dad. From teaching a teen to drive, holding a squirming toddler, trying to guide a child's drive and values, and being there for the family, we see that even with a script at hand, it's no easy job.

Execution

Since this spot revolves around the unpredictable nature of parenting, we decided to leave our “Dads” in the dark and plant the family actors to be “in” on our experiment – have the casting session be the actual commercial.

We held calls with three distinct groups. Our first calls were real, good actors. They knew how to take good direction and bad direction (in a sarcastic bad way) and give us exactly what we wanted.

Second calls featured less-skilled actors. They gave us something great because their bad performances reflected the fluster and grasping-at-straws that real Dads do.

Our third group consisted of non-actors. We told them to audition for the part of a Dad because they had the right look and personality that we were after. We got a good mix of “real” moments and some really awful, hilarious moments as well. At the end of day, we got a variety of different men tackling the hardest job in the world.

Our planted actors were some very talented improvers. They knew what they were doing and gave the Dads the perfectly random characters to play off of and react to, helping us get some really great and unexpected stuff.
