Description

A group of citizens including professionals, community leaders, businessmen and regular citizens got together to see how they could create awareness about the lack of security in the country. This organization had no political or religious affiliations. They didn’t represent any particular social class either. Their only objective was to create a movement to have the government and Costa Ricans in general, do something in regards to this huge problem. The organization was seeking to have the government and the people of Costa Rica assume their responsibilities: 1. Revamp legislation to prosecute criminals.

2. Strengthen the educational system.

3. Boost moral values awareness.

Execution

1. The first step was brainstorming and planning everything out2. Next, we establishing contact with the murdered victims’ organization3. Then we began selecting the cases4. Biographies and visual aids were prepared7. We carried out the production process8. The graphic campaign was launched (press and posters)9. The Exhibit’s Premier took place10. The Exhibit opened its doors to the public from February 20 to March 11. Our work was exhibited at one of the most important buildings in Costa Rica: the Elections Tribunal. Today it is being shown outside of the capital at the central gallery of the Port of Puntarenas.

Outcome

- "The Value of Life" event created a social avalanche that got the government to update its legislation and create public awareness.-The families of the murdered victims had been invisible to the government and society prior to these events. Such events helped the people face the reality that Costa Rica was no longer a peaceful nation.-The event sparked the approval and signing of a law which had been placed on the "back burner" by legislators: the Victims and Witnesses Protection law.-40,000 visited the exhibit during the first two weeks. Today, we can still see these exhibits touring the nation.-The impact of the exhibition was multiplied by a complete news coverage that included the major national mass media channels, of which some of the most important are: TV channels: 7, 6, 11, 42, as well as international news networks such as CNN and UNIVISION.Newspapers: La Nación, Diario Extra, La República, Al Día, La TejaInternet: www.fusildechispas.com,www.89decibeles.com, www.redcultura.com
