Execution
Our ambition to shoot as much as possible in-camera meant the animation was first built as a pre-vis in Maya. This stage was used to test how we could capture motion in-camera, exploring how a forced perspective could convey speed as well as background environments within the cube. These explorations were done in Houdini, where custom and in-house algorithms were used to program motion control rigs and map out each 3D printed frame from the snow world. Once the motion was mapped, much experimentation was done with scaling to ensure each printed model had a coarse texture like real snow. For the ice world, we shot a plastic cube using a motion rig and composited CGI characters inside using Nuke. To go out with a proper bang, the final explosion at the end was shot in slow motion using a real block of ice.
