Description
Having a child can be tough on first-time parents. This is how one father puts it all into perspective, with a little help from the movies.
Execution
Open on a close up shot of a guy sleeping on the sofa in a hospital room. We hear a baby cry. As our main character begins to wake up, we hear his voice over.
Man VO: I didn’t want to be a father. What for? I never liked kids, not at all. I never dreamed of having one…
We cut to a shot of his wife profoundly asleep in the hospital’s bed. Her mouth is wide open. VO continues.
Man VO: I met Claudia, and it’s not like she made me want to. Quite the opposite, she almost forced me.
We then see our guy get up from the sofa and walk towards the room’s window. He looks pensive.
Man VO: I thought that, as her belly was growing, I’d get excited. But nothing changed. I felt nothing. I didn’t even want to get close to her. I began to worry. Am I a bad guy?
We cut to our guy at the hospital corridor. He’s talking to a nurse who’s taking notes. She looks impressed. We realize he’s giving her the baby’s name.
Man VO: But something happened the day I came up with the name of the baby.
We cut back to our guy in the hospital room. We see him putting on his slippers and walking towards the baby. He looks at his wife and picks the baby up.
Man VO: I realized it was going to be OK. It was as if everything that left a mark in my life had started to make sense thanks to my son.
We see a close up shot of the father holding up the baby and looking into the baby’s eyes.
Man VO: I’ll never forget the first time I held him, looked him in the eyes and said…
Man (to baby): Luke, I am your father.
We see our guy holding the baby as supers start to appear on the screen.
