Description
Jackie Robinson stepped onto the field and into history becoming the first African American to play major league baseball. 66 years later, New Era celebrated this anniversary by paying tribute on Jackie Robinson Day, and invited fans to join them. Professional teams, athletes and fans across the country began tipping their hat to Jackie.
To making history instead of quietly going into it. To sacrificing everything so those behind you can stand on your shoulders for a better view. First is a responsibility. It’s a contract to change the game for future generations.
Minutes after going live, fans across the world began tipping their hats to Jackie.
So Here’s to First. Because First changes everything.
In this film, we’ll see people taking their hat off to the POV of the camera in different places all
over NYC. As we walk, we see cops and subway riders, people uptown, downtown and midtown.
We see cabbies, rich, poor, young and old, people from all walks of life, including a few wellknown
faces (all firsts in their own right). But we don’t know why they’re removing their caps.
On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African-American in the major leagues when he played his first game with the Brooklyn Dodgers.
We reveal a kid in a Dodgers cap with a Jackie Robinson t-shirt and getting respect from people because of it.
They’re honoring the first.
Execution
Utilizing a RED EPIC mounted on a Steadi-Cam at 5K resolution and overcranked from between 80 and 200FPS, we captured the vignettes of our subjects in a fluid motion giving the viewer a sense of a constant movement forward.
Because of the nimble nature of the shoot we relied on natural daylight and a small package of Grip Lighting (ie, Bounce boards and mirrors).
A nimble production crew of 7 people we're employed to capture the vignettes on location in Brooklyn, NY within the span of an 8 hour day.
From a casting standpoint, we chose to use "real people" for the most part as we wanted the piece to be as authentic as possible and mirror what one would see on the streets of Brooklyn.
Editorially, Adobe Premiere was used to cut the piece. DaVinci Resolve 10 was used to color and finish the piece.
Outcome
The ad is quietly powerful instead of cloying because it attempts to illustrate Robinson's enduring legacy in the present day rather than using archival footage of the player's past. Within minutes after going live, fans across the world began tipping their hats to Jackie using the hashtag #FirstChangesEverything
