OVERVIEW

Description

At international soccer matches, the fans support their national teams with patriotic flags. So we thought: what would happen if, at the Copa America 2016, the national soccer team of Ecuador was supported with a flag that symbolized the country in ruins after the earthquake?

Execution

-The national flag is the untouchable symbol of any country. In order to galvanize the public and reawaken awareness of the earthquake’s devastation, we misplaced the symbols of Ecuador’s flag: the condor, the blue fringe, the sun, we sank the boat in the river; everything composed subtly, to create visual harmony in the disharmony.

- On Twitter and Instagram we posted clean studio photos of people holding a small version of the 7.8 Earthquake flag. These tweets generated buzz with the hashtag and call to action #IRebuildEcuador

- A crowd of soccer fans waved a 10 foot version of the 7.8 Earthquake flag in the Copa America Brazil vs Ecuador match attended by 80,000 soccer fans, millions of tv viewers and thousands of Twitter followers.

Outcome

- Sport News Radio CRE Satellital from Ecuador with more than 70,000 followers twitted several times about the stunt in real-time.

- LA Times Journalist Kevin Baxter wrote about the stunt and tweeted it in real-time.

- Ecuador Sport journalist and celebrity Maria Soledad Reyes, tweeted about the stunt in real-time generating more than 9,000 interactions.

- Los Angeles charity organization “Unidos por Ecuador” sent a container of food to Ecuador, using the 7.8 Earthquake flag as their symbol.

- “Juntos por Manabi” Telethon announced the stunt on national TV.

- Ecuador national soccer team midfielder Fidel Martinez publicly supported the stunt.

- Soccer fans jumped on the conversation via Twitter supporting the cause, liking it, re-tweeting it.
