Execution
The design of the device hit several roadblocks during its early development, given that phones are physically unable to output energy and are especially sensitive to any spikes or changes in electricity; the slightest dip in the source output will not be recognized by the source and cut off any level of power-sharing between phones. The initial level of voltage output that could be generated was too low to result in any actual ‘charging.’ Attempts at using an amplifier only resulted in a total loss of energy from the source. The surface mount technology (SMT) and connectors used to create the device would have normally been produced and assembled with machinery – however due to budget constraints, everything had to be done by hand.
A digital artist from Taiwan took on the challenge and found a breakthrough way to transfer energy from an iPhone to any other smartphone. He was able to develop a working prototype which was then taken to be reproduced into a more user-friendly design.
Outcome
The simple innovation solves a real problem in the everyday lives of teens (addressing their digital needs) and demonstrates perfectly how only Coca-Cola can truly recharge happiness.
The current prototype is set for mass production by Coca-Cola, to be given as a premium to go with backstage passes at music festivals globally.
