Description

Our creative idea is based on a simple truth - what we share is more powerful than what divides us. This insight grew out of conversations with our audience, who told us that they don’t let traditional male/female roles limit how they think about themselves or those they love. They believe our humanity connects us all, regardless or gender identity or expression.

To make this idea relevant for a global audience, though, we needed to break down HeForShe’s global mission into locally relevant topics. And again our audience showed us the way. They shared their day-to-day experiences of inequality around the world, which helped us identify a core set of action issues: education, health, identity, politics, work, and violence. Focusing on these issues allowed us to connect with audiences on topics that matter most to their communities and accelerate their ability to create real change.

Execution

The new HeForShe launched in 2016 as a fully responsive website available in seven official UN languages.

In the run up, we teased the experience in social media, energizing our base. And then on launch day, Emma Watson sat for an interview that surged through social media, driving new audiences.

On HeForShe.org, these audiences discovered a completely reimagined platform. The new homepage features everyday activists and global leaders standing together for shared equality issues, and the HeForShe commitment is now a radical statement of unity for people of every gender.

To accelerate change, users add their voice to a global map of the most urgent equality issues and share behavioral changes and social media conversation starters that promote gender equality at home, work, and school. And a multimedia newsroom presents compelling stories from around the world that share our advocate’s success and spotlight our champions.

Outcome

By turning the power of the United Nations over to the people, HeForShe is extending its reach, amplifying its impact, and accelerating change in communities around the world. In fact, by every measure, the new HeForShe is giving energy and direction to a truly inclusive, impactful gender equality movement.
