Description
We created a series of family testimonials that seems normal, but then reveals a truth about domestic violence when you type 1-8-0 (the number of Brazil's anonymous tip hotline) on your keyboard. Each number corresponds to a YouTube's time keyboard shortcut, that moves the video backwards and forwards. By doing so, the video was edited, changing the character’s speech, forming a new sentence that reveals a call for help behind the relationships: false imprisonment, sexual abuse and physical violence. All the editing mechanics were created based on features already available on the platform, with no need for intervention.
Execution
Three videos about different families were broadcasted on Band TV’s YouTube Channel. Although, they seemed to be about everyday life, in fact, each video addressed to one kind of violence: physical, sexual and false imprisonment. The first one shows a mature couple. The woman talks about her duties as a housewife. When the numbers 1-8-0 are typed on the keyboard, activating YouTube shortcuts and editing the speech, the woman says her husband beats her. The second video shows a father, his daughter and his son. The boy says he would like to have more attention because their father spends too much time with his sister. When 1-8-0 is typed, his speech is edited to: he abuses her. On the last video, we see a young couple and the wife talks about her over protective husband. When 1-8-0 is typed, the woman's speech is edited to: I'm locked at home.
Outcome
The campaign started a conversation with our audience that searched videos material on our Youtube Channel, and impacted more than 4 million people on various medium: YouTube, social media, radio and TV. First, they’re broadcasted on the Youtube Channel, then they were news on Band TV and gained force, becoming organic sharing. Also, the calls for 180 (Brazil's anonymous hotline) have increased 7%. Along with awareness, the videos also showed that domestic violence can happen in any family, regardless of income or social status.
