Background

Yahoo! JAPAN, an internet service website with over 71.2 billion monthly accesses, prides itself on continued innovation and providing the “!” experience. As Japan’s Internet’s history much aligns itself to that of Yahoo! JAPAN’s, a special website was created over the course of one year to showcase the history of the Internet in a visually intriguing manner.

Idea

The target for this project were all of Japan’s Internet users. Stemmed from the concept that the Internet is a grand piece of art created by mankind, 1,478 remarkable events from 1969 to 2018 were designed in 3D models to create a “3D Sculpture Tower” in the form of a website.

Strategy

The target for this project were all of Japan’s Internet users. Stemmed from the concept that the Internet is a grand piece of art created by mankind, 1,478 remarkable events from 1969 to 2018 were designed in 3D models to create a “3D Sculpture Tower” in the form of a website.

Users can climb up the tower by dragging, and spin it around to view if from 360 degrees. Users can also search for particular events by entering keywords in the search bar, as well as click on a particular year on the right UI to jump to that year. Users can click on every 3D model to highlight and see more information on that particular event.

Execution

The statue embodies a low-polygon design with 1,478 selected events as 3D models. Adjustments were made so that the number of polygons of the 3D models did not interfere with the user experience.

The neutral texture selected creates a natural feel, but the website itself is filled with so much content it walks on the absolute limit, creating a new experience rich not usually seen in websites using 3D models. Users can climb up and down the tower and spin it around, allowing all 360 degrees to be viewed. Each model can be clicked on to show details of that event as well as shared on social media.

Outcome

The message behind this campaign is to "learn from the past and to continue making history for the next generation". The 3D Sculpture Tower does not have a summit as the history of internet will continue to be made.
