OVERVIEW

Execution

The four-minute soundscape, ‘wish it had been a dream’: Voices from Syria is crafted from WhatsApp voice messages from people in Syria who have endured 10 years of conflict, a musical score by renowned Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh and subtle layers of sound effects created using exclusively the voice messages as the source material.

It was essential that the piece be built around the honesty and authenticity of the raw source materials – the WhatsApp messages - in order to ensure that their voices are heard and are not forgotten after a decade of conflict.

The audio components come together and play off of each other's strengths to take listeners on a journey to contemplate and reflect on the profoundly difficult and intimate experiences, but also the everyday moments of joy and pride that reflect our shared humanity and an enduring hope for a future without conflict.
