Description

"I’m with the banned" follow artists from a country targeted by the travel ban as they travel to Toronto for the musical collaboration while looking back on the journey that brought them there.

It explores each musician’s personal story, and the complicated role that music has played along the way. As they begin to work with their American collaborators, music becomes a universal point of connection. By the end of each short film a brand new song was created, and we realize what we stand to lose when we become less open.

Execution

"I'm with the banned" debuted July 6 with a series of enhanced playlists that will feature music and original video content highlighting six artists from Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Yemen and Iran, which are the countries included in Donald Trump’s proposed travel ban.

The series of six short films that told each artist's backstory and documented their collaboration. We launched the content one week after Trump's "revised" travel ban on a mixed-media playlist that allowed users to watch each film and then listen to its accompanying song.

A broader promotional campaign across OOH, social, and digital display furthered the program's message. Suddenly, otherwise unknown artists were covering the sides of buildings and premium real estate within Spotify's platform usually reserved for superstars. Spotify placed this bold messaging in unexpected locations: from international airport terminals to the streets of Washington, D.C., making a statement of unity in places divided by debate.
