Abraham Lincoln is put in an awkward situation when Mrs Lincoln asks the dreaded question any wife could ask her husband.
THE CRAFTWe shot 35mm color negative on a camera modified to be operated with a hand crank. We varied the frame rate a lot to kill off the smoothness of a motor, and create that pulse that happens when you under/over expose the film. It averaged out to about 12 frames per second, after which we transferred the film at 12 frames (instead of 24) so that everything would play at normal speed. At 12fps, you definitely notice a flicker.
Since you can't sync sound to picture when you do this sort of thing we recorded the audio and laid it back over picture by eye.We also used a funky little lens called a lens baby which approximates the shitty optics of early lenses. There were no coatings in the lenses which made for more pronounced lense flares, blooming highlights, etc.We made a print of the 35mm film and blew it down to 16mm, made a new negative and made a new print from that. And of course we never cleaned the film along the way.
