OVERVIEW

Description

Our client’s new product line is a cloud-based IoT lighting system for commercial use. All lights and controllers connect to cloud, can be controlled and configured wirelessly. It’s simple to use, flexible to install, energy efficient, smart and well supported.

The idea was to create a connected tangible installation as a metaphor for this new product line, and transfer the tradition booth space into a future world.

Connect thousands of customized living grass sets with Ethernet wires, embed motion sensors in the grass field to detect people, customize mechanics and electronics to make each set of grass can respond to people by swaying back and forth, and form a connected grass field to wave in patterns, just like when the wind blows in a nature field.

Execution

Our client had 1200 sq ft /222 sq meter booth, one of the largest booths in the tradeshow.

We were commissioned 3 months before the opening. It was a great challenge to deliver a brand new interactive tangible installation in such a short timeline including ideation, design, prototyping, engineering, and installation. We counted every day and night, worked with vendors in different time zones, and parallel design and engineering.

We started with ideation and rapid prototyping with 3D printing, CNC, and laser cutting technology. When we iterated the prototypes, we started to work on the floor plan. We arranged 1500 sets of grass in the space, designed a curved path across the grass field, and 2 showrooms. When finalized all design, mechanics, and electrics, we shift to fabrication, assembly, testing, plant grass, as well as software development. Finally, we installed 1500 sets in the tradeshow.

Outcome

The installation successfully attracted record number of visitors to come to RAB Lighting’s booth, to experience the company’s vision of a future IoT connected world, and to learn about the company’s innovative products.

The installation itself became a hot topic of the tradeshow. People took photos and videos and posted online. There were visitors asked for if they can take a few grass sets with them.

The tangible grass installation gave sales team an opportunity to talk to visitors more naturally. Visitors were curious and actively asked about how it relates to the company’s products.

It distinguished our clients from other 591 highly-competitive brands and booths, and won Best Booth Award (900+ sqft) in the tradeshow.
