Description
Not for the faint of heart, this video has strong and unforgettable images. Everything from the close intimate camera angles, dramatic lighting, and familiar photographic/stop motion animation technique make a sincere thought-provoking peace. Made for Women Against Gun Violence, this PSA is a branded content full-length music video with a chorus that urges millenials to “Keep your finger off the trigger.”
Execution
We decided to create a style that no one's ever really seen before by combining photographic images with CG and stop motion. This enabled us to create a distorted reality full of imagery you'll never forget. The video takes us through a visual journey in which we learn of darkly comedic ways you can use and lose - all 10 fingers. Clever visuals are paired with thought provoking versus to express that, whatever you do, “keep your finger off the trigger.”
The use of stop-motion serves to compliment the folksy feel of the song and achieves the tone we wanted to impart. The music and lyrics are deceptively light and child-like, complimenting the folksy animation style. With it, we successfully took a subject full of gore and were able to make it more likable. The use of live-action compliments the stop-motion with real human faces delivering the powerful, sticky message in the chorus. This juxtaposition of live-action and stop-motion, glued together by the warm color palate and lighting technique, makes this piece unique and fresh.
The animation style had to match the song not too slick overly produced sincere and heartfelt. To this end we used photographic images and retouching techniques to remove fingers and make impossible things happen. The opening and closing hand creatures were created from models of 20 fingers and were used in traditional stop motion with the latest retouching techniques to create an iconic image that you'll never forget. Fingers were removed, stubs tracked on, foreground and background plates combined to create images that are not only how did they do that but retaining their humanity and connection to the viewer.
