Description
Our idea was a solution to one of the biggest problems in the 21st century: eating KFC’s deliciously – and messy – fried chicken while using mobile phones. Because Singaporeans love KFC’s, but they also love using their phones while eating it. So, we created the KFC Finger, a touch-capacitive finger, compatible with Android and iOS, which allows our fans to eat fried chicken and use the mobile phone at the same time. With the KFC Finger, they can swipe up, double-tap, play games, embrace their keyboard warrior side and keep the screen spotlessly clean. Because when you’re using the mobile and eating fried chicken, ten fingers are not enough. A product that builds the brand in perfect sync with our core business, and makes eating fried chicken and using the mobile a compatible experience. It’s finger clickin’ good.
Execution
The design phase started in mid-2017, and the first prototype was ready later that year. The packaging was being designed at the same time, highlighting – in a witty and engaging manner – all its benefits: as tactile as real fingers, gender-neutral design, Android and iOS compatibility. Finally, we chose a very specific date for its official launch: April 21st, World Creativity and Innovation Day, when 500 units of the KFC Finger were available at selected outlets in Singapore, with the purchase of a fried chicken variety pack.
Outcome
After its launch, the KFC finger changed the way our customers used their phones in our restaurants. It was an immediate hit, and all the units were in our customer’s hands in less than a week, keeping their phone screens spotlessly clean while they ate our fried chicken. The “It’s finger clickin’ good” tagline, clearly inspired from our original “It’s finger lickin’ good” made it even easier to spread awareness about this “revolutionary” product. After all the success, KFC already ordered 50000 more fingers to be distributed in KFC’s outlets in countries all around southeast Asia.
