A generative sound experiment was required to explore the LEGO bricks as a "musical instrument", making the creative journey more important than the destination.
The key was to build an immersive story for each track that evoked nostalgia while referencing the idea of white noise and mindfulness. Targeted at adults, we had to ensure that the tracks were soothing, calming, yet recognisably produced solely by LEGO bricks. A bulk of the creative process involved first-hand experimentation with LEGO pieces to discover new ways of interacting with and manipulating them, setting a sound stage to produce a range of articulations and sounds, and importantly, feelings. This included dropping, touching and connecting LEGO pieces to capture tactile, organic sounds that also told a clear story through audio alone.
This project was responding to a recent research during COVID that shows that 73% of adults are looking for new ways to de-stress.
