OVERVIEW

Description

A breakdancing troupe called “The Saxonz” appear able to defy physics in stunning displays of artistic exuberance. It is “the rhythm of a heartbeat” that informs the world of each new life, a voiceover explains, but society is quick to put each life in a box. That’s the cue for the film to break into a wordless exploration of human possibility, as dancer, location and camera begin to move as one. The filmmaker stages “The Saxonz” interacting with 35 dramatic settings in their native Saxony: from an abandoned house in Leipzig to the dreamlike Old Bridge in Kromlau; and from deep in a Dresden coal mine to the iconic Karl-Marx Monument in Chemnitz. The accelerating rhythms, captured with a lightweight Ronin M camera stabilization system, leads to a death-defying and life-affirming finale high atop a sandstone pillar in Swiss Saxony: “I danced while the music was being played.”
