Description

Fourteen days before Halloween, a Facebook app launched with a lollipop and the words "I dare you." Once you grant permission on Facebook, here’s what you see: Down in a dark basement, a sweaty, lurid man logs into your Facebook page. He begins to scroll through your profile page, intensely fixated on what he sees. He studies your personal photos. He examines your friend lists. With his grimy hand, he mouses through your news feeds and personal information. Ultimately, this stalker, with an unknown motive, arrives at your house.

Execution

A haunting, live-action, Facebook Connect driven site that dares you to “Take This Lollipop.” Once you grant permission on this Facebook app, here’s what you see:Down in a dark basement, a sweaty, lurid man logs into your Facebook page. He begins to scroll through your profile page, intensely fixated on what he sees. He studies your personal photos. He examines your friend lists. With his grimy hand, he mouses through your news feeds and personal information. (The site is plugging your personal data right into the story.) Ultimately, this stalker, with an unknown motive, arrives at your location, seen via Google Street View.

Ominous, disturbing and thought provoking, it’s a sort of twisted and frightening fairy tale, personalised. It taps into the underlying fear of privacy that people have with Facebook and other social networking sites. The website launched two weeks before Halloween, with a single Tweet.

Outcome

The results were transformational and ground-breaking. From CNN to NY Times to the New Zealand Herald, every major news source from around the globe reported on this unique Facebook experience and its commentary on privacy. Mashable recorded Lollipop as the fastest growing app of all time. Most likely, the most successful Facebook Connect experience of all time, Lollipop achieved a global audience with over 10m ‘likes’ and 60m views in just the first 30 days alone.
