Execution
Without directly explaining the game content, the samurai, who is the main game character, literally appears throughout the magazine, and "slashes" through all kinds of content from articles and magazine logos to pin-up girls and even the advertisement of another advertiser. This unique approach not only had a large visual impact, but also, in combination with the 10 tenets of the Samurai Code which were scattered throughout the magazine, facilitated the reader's natural journey into the game world view, and successfully stimulated pre-launch interest in the game. Achieving this success required clearing some very difficult hurdles including very difficult negotiations with not only the publisher but also other advertisers. However, the successful result was the "hijacking" of 39 pages out of the total magazine volume of 181 pages.
Outcome
After the magazine went on sale, game orders from the target were 120% over the forecast. The advertising had a clearly large impact on sales.
