Description
Our intention was to create a network of Mediaboards to serve as a communication tool between city and its inhabitants. We developed an interface which split the surface of the display into 2 zones - social and commercial. Each zone gets exactly half of the screen. In the social zone we show navigation (street name and direction), traffic speed, road congestions ahead, closest parking lots, weather forecast and other useful information. This social zone is provided to city administration for free and we constantly ask for feedback from city inhabitants and guests to display relevant information. We use the commercial part of the screen to sell advertising and generate cash flow, because Mediaboards are installed with our own investment. The idea is brand new and our own creation.
Execution
Mediaboard is an integrated solution which combines high quality LED panel, industry grade media player, as well as software and interface developed by our team. For our current outdoor project we use 9 meter high and 2.6 meter wide LED panels with pixel pitch 10 or 6.67 mm. Software that we developed allows us to remotely monitor working conditions of the on-board equipment (voltage, humidity, power status, temperature, hard drive status etc) and remotely update the content. This allows us to keep the team size almost constant even as we scale the project not only in one city, but grow internationally. The content management system that we built from scratch allows for automatic update of the content in both social and commercial zones based on external parameters, such as weather conditions, time of day, incoming data from search engines, social media and any other external data sources. The “Blue Magic” visual effect allows for multiple layers of images to be displayed on top of one another creating a multi layer eye-catching visual content. The Mediaboard is equipped with a camera to count car and pedestrian traffic and provide quantitative feedback on marketing campaigns to our clients.
Outcome
After successfully installing Mediaboards in Almaty, Kazakhstan, our plan is to expand globally. We have showcased our product at international exhibitions and brought people from all over the world to our city to experience our Mediaboard “showroom”. The response has been positive and we are currently planning pilot installations in Singapore, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi. We have picked South East Asia and Middle East, as Digital out of home advertising in these regions is set to grow the fastest, and regulatory framework is favorable for new technologies. Our plan is to install first few pilots using our own investment and we are confident in its success. Mediaboards are generating competitive return on investment in Almaty, where outdoor advertising cost is a fraction of the prices in large cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore, hence in these cities the payback period for our investment is even shorter.
