Description

Awareness and understanding of autism in New Zealand is fairly limited. Primarily, the goal of this campaign was to increase autism awareness and encourage grants and donations to fund the research that is being conducted. Further to this, we wanted to encourage New Zealanders affected by autism, and their families, to register to be participants in the research programme. Because for the first time ever, an organisation is attempting to make a difference to the world of autism rather than just providing support.

Execution

The 3 long copy posters each address a different symptom of autism spectrum disorder to show how complex Autism Spectrum Disorder really is. The copy alternates between the differing perspectives of a scientist and a mind affected by autism to demonstrate how differently they perceive the world, and the visual treatment of the blocks that it sits on also reflects this.

Outcome

The circulation of these posters helped to establish the newly founded Minds for Minds as the leading autism research organisation in New Zealand in an environment where the research is most relevant. By accurately portraying both what living with autism is like and the attempts that the team of scientists are making, the campaign helped to ignite public discussion of the disorder in the media and amongst the scientific community. This provided families affected by autism with the hope that as the research gathers momentum, the world of autism could be better understood and the lives of those affected by the disorder a lot more manageable in years to come.
