OVERVIEW

Background

The Corian Moodboard Maker is a fully responsive web app, working on all devices and window or screen sizes, to give users a beautiful demo of what it’s like to design with Corian. It provides curated inspiration for seven styles, along with the ability to upload your own images for a fully custom result.

The Moodboard Maker helped the Corian Design brand pursue a bigger frame of reference with designers, architects, and homeowners to position Corian not just as an outdated countertop material but as a legit design brand with a real design-based tool.

Idea

Corian was being perceived as your parents’ countertop from the ’80s. However, they wanted to be seen as a modern design material with many uses, similar to fabric, wood, or tile. To do that, we had to make Corian relevant at the very beginning of the design process.

Most homeowners, designers, and architects begin their design process by creating an inspiration moodboard. So we created a web app that does just that — but in a whole new way. In a few taps, the Corian Design Moodboard Maker lets you create a moodboard that isn’t just a useful design guide, but a unique piece of art. We curated textures and Corian swatches for seven different aesthetics to show there’s a Corian choice for any style. For further personalization, users could add their own photos.

Strategy

To truly understand Corian, we first needed to understand how it’s made. Visiting a surface fabricator, we saw concrete, marble and granite cut with high-pressure water into big rectangular slabs. Then we saw Corian being shaped with fire.

Because Corian solid surface is molded with heat, it’s endlessly mutable. Unlike its trendier counterparts, it can be anything, fulfill any vision.

Our hypothesis: If we could shift perceptions about Corian being just a white kitchen countertop, we could change the trajectory of the brand. What if we were more than just countertops? What if the brand was seen as a design material? Something that could shape and enhance how people live?

To test our hypothesis, we showed people an image of some of the wild objects you can create with Corian: a lamp, a sink, a bathtub — even earrings and the cladding of an ultra-modern building.

For people who saw these simple images, perceptions of Corian improved dramatically.

Our insight: It’s not the material that’s dated; it’s people’s perceptions of what the material can do that’s locked in the past.

So our strategy was to show people that Corian’s not a countertop; it’s an endlessly flexible, innovative design material.

Execution

The Corian Design Moodboard Maker is a fully responsive web app that gives users a beautiful demo of what it’s like to design with Corian. It provides curated inspiration for seven styles, along with the ability to upload your own images for a fully custom result. Users can share their finished moodboard on social media, download it for reference, or even order a framed print. The app also gives them more details about the Corian textures they chose and points them directly to their nearest retailer.

To promote our new tool, we partnered with Bobby Berk, professional designer and star of the Emmy Award–winning Netflix show “Queer Eye,” and other paid influencers who used the Moodboard Maker, to create and share their own moodboards.

We also took the Moodboard Maker on the road, installing a 12-foot-high interactive version of the tool in one of the world’s most iconic architectural destinations: Grand Central Station. The 750,000 visitors passing through the transit hub every day were invited to create and display their own moodboards, along with users around the world, who could create moodboards remotely and share them via social media livestream.

Outcome

Since launch, over 35,000 moodboards have been created in 185 countries. The perception of Corian as “modern” increased by 213%, and “stylish” increased by 159%. Meanwhile, perception of Corian as “outdated” decreased by 88%. Our work continues to shift perceptions and drive positive opinion and consideration — and Corian credits it with helping them achieve sales growth 50% over plan.

What’s more, we even got Bobby Berk — professional designer and star of the Emmy Award–winning Netflix show “Queer Eye” — interested in using the Moodboard Maker! After trying it out, he posted “Corian really hit it out of the park with this one.” Thanks, Bobby!
