Description
Regarding Mozilla’s request and the fact that they promoted the idea of Open source, we wanted this concept to be the heart of the project. By this we mean we hope that people will understand the strength of sharing design and the opportunities it can bring to the world.
Execution
Mozilla Japan is part of the Mozilla Foundation, which has promoted the idea of open source software. “Open Source” is a modern movement aiming at sharing software code to encourage its global free usage and participative development. So far, this movement yielded a wide range of high-quality software developed with limited resources. This office has been designed using common products such as corner modules or plastic pallets, exploring the concept of “Open Source Furniture”. Most significantly, all drawings are being uploaded online, making them available for free to anyone willing to make functional office furniture inexpensively.
Outcome
Considering the concept of the project, we are not looking at its sales results but at its success as shared design. Since the end of construction, we kept contact with the company, which seems to enjoy both the qualities and flexibility of the design. What’s more, a class discussion about the design took place in Keio University SFC and the project has been included in Mozilla’s global campaign of “One Mozilla”. According to the client, the discussions about Mozilla Factory Space have evolved beyond the scope of design, which makes “Open Source Furniture” an evolving concept.
