The NCSC brand needs to be adept, discreet and in the background. The brand identity and its visual cues were inspired by the language of binary coding. Binary is a highly effective system of computing which deciphers hidden instructions and messages. It represents letters with a calculated arrangement using a two-digit number system of only 0’s and 1’s. It is able to conceal complex communication using simple decoding.

This secret language of code closely aligns NCSC with the digital domain and illustrates the smart and innovative way in which the organisation conducts its duties. It reminds the internal users that the brand is always on and operating in the background and under the surface.

We created our own bespoke version of the binary code that could differentiate between individual letters and numbers, whole words, and lines of text. This is aided by a simple alternating tri colour principle. On the surface this systemised graphic appears to be purely for decorative purposes. However for those qualified and in the know, it is a vehicle for hidden messages and instructions. On digital applications a simple swipe and the concealed words are revealed. We made the code bold and solid enough so that it would never be compromised when printed, screened, stamped or projected.

The launch of the brand has been met with both excitement and admiration in the cyber community. The NCSC brand is perceived as a quiet yet commanding and authoritative figure head. With this positive brand perception, the group are leveraging its credibility when organising or hosting conferences and seminars. Internally, the new brand language is being infused into everyday behaviour to reinforce the brand’s primary role of decoding complex data.
