OVERVIEW

Background

The first global world-class automotive film created by an all female, Chinese team—featuring a Chinese woman designer in a Western dominated industry.

In the West today, made-in-China is often painted as “poor quality.” In a market dominated by Western influence, China’s youth continues to lack exposure to creations that truly reflect their modern heritage, causing nearly 52.5% of Chinese crafts to be on the verge of being forever lost.

For almost two decades, prominent designer Jiang Qionger (founder of SHANGXIA) has dedicated herself to revitalizing disappearing crafts by working with thousands of independent artisans to harmoniously combine craft, design and philosophy—creating a world-class Eastern aesthetic.

For the celebration of Ferrari’s 30 years in China, Jiang designed a one-of-a-kind Roma featuring Chinese aesthetics and craftsmanship. The film, launched in conjunction with the exclusive car, resulted in 5 billion global reaches—reviving a new generation’s interest in traditional craftsmanship.

Execution

“Origine” is a poetry-film featuring a woman designer merging disappearing Chinese craftsmanship with world-class automotive.

The three-part film opens with “In The Beginning,” a sublime meeting of heaven and earth. A poem, recited in an ink-washed Chinese landscape, brings us to the rebirth of Chinese craftsmanship.

The second part, “Dialogue,” is a celebration of the timeless exchange between Italian and Chinese craftsmanship. Featuring the hands of independent artisans across two continents— a truly inter-cultural dialogue is created between exquisite Chinese craftsmanship and innovative Italian automotive technologies.

The final “Encounter” brings the Ferrari Roma and thousand-year Chinese craftsmanship together into a joyful union. Through the unexpected juxtaposition of craftsmanship, nature, and design—a new modern, Eastern aesthetic is created. The classic proportions of a Ming-Dyansty chair and fifty traditional crafts is incorporated in the design of the one-of-a-kind tailor-made Roma.

Outcome

For 18 years, Jiang’s designs have revitalized 50+ crafts, revived 500+ workshops, and created 10,000+ craftsmen jobs. The creation of the car and the film brought together 50+ independent artisans across two continents— who took pride in sharing their disappearing heritage on an unprecented international stage.

While China leads #1 in global spendings in the luxury market, Chinese designers are not widely recognized on a global stage. With the film’s 5 billion+ reaches worldwide, Chinese youth are proud to recognize traditional heritage as capable of inspiring global influence, in a time where 47% of craftsmen are over 61 years old.

The film’s recognition led to the founding of TianYi foundation, a women-led initiative creating education and financial opportunities for craftsmen, especially women of ethnic minorities. The one-of-a-kind car was sold at auction following the film’s fanfare: 1 million RMB was donated to “Make-a-wish” China to support the dreams of women.
