At its best, advertising can connect with consumers and influence their behavior. At its best, public service communication has the potential to do something greater, it can influence positive social change. California’s passing of Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage was a huge issue during the local elections. A human rights issue and on a larger level, an issue of equality. However, in the months after the race, the debate was no longer getting significant press. We created “Devin & Glenn,” a short film starring, Justin Long, Mike White, Tom Arnold and Nora Dunnto rekindle the conversation at the crucial time while federal judges were in the middle of deliberating Prop 8. On August 4, 2010 a federal judge ruled that a voter initiative banning same-sex marriage in California violated the Constitution's equal protection and due process rights clauses. Despite overturning Prop 8 on August 8, 2010, an appeal is still pending in federal court. This underscores the continued importance of messaging like Devin & Glenn to raise awareness about basic human rights, equality and freedom under the law.
