Background

To say that female empowerment is having a moment is an understatement. But the culture of Las Vegas has always been one that promises adults—of any gender—complete freedom to do what they want, be who they want, feel how they want.

“Party of One” presents the city’s panoramic landscape of stunning sites and experiences through the eyes of this unexpected spectator. Like many Americans, Jessica wouldn’t dream of pampering herself because her calendar is normally consumed by commitments to her rewarding roles as career woman and mother who’s present for her kids. While Sheryl Sandburg famously advised working women to “Lean In” (Google it), this theory is much harder in practice.

Cultural references include lush cinematography of Paris and Venetian hotels that playfully recalls classic Hollywood depictions of European cities and a soundtrack (“Love Me Too” by Matthew O’Malley) that injects a lounge tune with a modern message.

Execution

Jessica is changing planes in Las Vegas on her way to a job interview when she receives a phone call. The look on her face says it all: This meeting that she was so excited about? Cancelled. Faced with several hours on her hands until the next flight home, she half-heartedly decides to head to the Strip for a quick lunch. There, she meets a Hostess—a “muse,” of sorts—who convinces her to take the weekend for herself and embrace this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

The working mom reluctantly considers this idea, and over the next 48 hours, her reticence turns to empowerment as she discovers how rejuvenating life can be when she allows herself to indulge in a little “me time.” She dances, drives through the desert and sips Champagne in the bathtub. Because in Vegas, the only judge of your character is the one you see in the mirror.
