OVERVIEW

Description

The campaign calls for the arrest of Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir, under arrest warrant for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide – who is yet still free. The campaign incites people to sign the petition to stop Bashir, to raise awareness worldwide. The campaign is made of 2 different digital films, a flyer and a stopbechir.com website. All elements direct viewers to the stopbechir.com website where they can sign the petition for Bashir’s arrest.

The first film, 'Dictators don’t just stop', shows past dictators who have changed jobs and are now tailors, pet groomers, etc. But that never happened, because dictators don’t just stop: they keep going, hence the need to stop Bashir now.

The second film, 'Behind prison bars' shows Bashir behind bars, only to realise that the bars are not prison bars but silhouettes of microphones, of trees etc. Hence the need to act now to put Bashir in jail.

Execution

We imagined a petition that people would send back to the Collectif Urgence Darfour. The flyer concealed a fatal trick for Omar Al-Bashir, who was appearing on the front part of the flyer, standing behind trees. By cutting the petition coupon on the back of the flyer, to send it back to the NGO, people literally, and immediately, sent Al-Bashir behind 'bars': the front of the coupon then showed him behind the prison bar-looking lower part of the trees.

Outcome

The NGO handed out the flyer during a special event to kick-off the 'Stop Bashir' campaign, and then during each of the NGO’s demonstrations and meetings in France. The response was very positive and Collectif Urgence Darfour received hundreds of signed coupons, and several congratulations from activists and NGOs on the efficiency of this medium.
