Execution

Partnering with Oxford University neuroscientist Doctor Russell Foster, we used Dr. Foster's own research that proved the existence of a third photoreceptor in the eye. We can't stress how critical this was:

"For hundreds of years, people assumed the eye was just rods and cones. This is simply not true."

These long overlooked photoreceptors are the ones responsible for "resetting" the body's clock. And this insight led us to the creation of the Photon Shower by Delta.

The Photon Shower by Delta bathes its user in a spectrum-specific dose of blue light (the kind that most excites the photoreceptors). Just how much light, and for how long, depends on a couple key factors: How long had the user had been travelling? What direction was the user travelling from? All this information feeds in to the Photon Shower's unique algorithm letting it know if it has to advance or delay the user's body clock. It's this controlled exposure that more readily lets the user adapt to the time zone he/she is in. The faster the adaptation, the quicker jet lag disappears.

Outcome

The Photon Shower was such a hit with customers that Delta is considering the various ways they might be able to incorporate the experience on a more permanent basis.

The Ted event (Photon Shower and Sleep Lounge) was a creative way to showcase and promote Delta's commitment to reinventing sleep on their planes. The new Westin Heavenly In-Flight bedding product will be available on all BusinessElite® International flights, as well as BusinessElite flights between New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle and between Atlanta and Honolulu, beginning in June 2013.
