Description
We created the world’s first “table tennis musical instrument.”
The table was turned into an instrument using project mapping with sampling pads placed on the table. An infrared sensor detected the exact location of the flying table tennis ball, and judged the moment the ball hit the table - producing the sound programmed in the system. This was made possible through the precise control of the rally speed and position where the ball hit the table.
we took advantage of the rhythmic quality of tennis table’s rallies and joined it with the electronic dance music scene that young people are so crazy about, to create a video full of impact. Combining the force and delicateness of the Japanese national table tennis team, we re-created an original song by the popular Japanese DJ, DAISHI DANCE.
Execution
Throughout the World Championships, the television commercial was aired and released as a web movie. The production was covered by sports programs before its release.
Additionally, through internet music streaming,we were able to grasp?the twenties culture.Following the close of the World Championships, the commercial continues to be televised.
Outcome
Immediately following the commercial release, the video was covered in 100+ online news stories in and out of Japan. Table tennis athletes from around the country responded with comments saying they had “hoped for something like this” and they “received the courage to continue playing.” Comments also came from people without any prior interaction with table tennis, saying things such as, “my image of table tennis changed” and “I’ll be cheering for the Japanese national team.” As a result, the image of table tennis as cool increased 64%, and its ranking in sports popularity rose from 8th to 4th. Additionally, the television ratings of the world table tennis championships increased by 150% and the video was used during domestic table tennis competitions. Together with this video, the image of table tennis within Japan was re-examined, and amongst young people the image of table tennis was reborn as a cool sport.
