Description
POP Marble Run is designed with interaction at its heart – embracing both intent and chance by enabling participants to construct a visual representation, which creates an unexpected sound signature.
John Cage, a pioneer of indeterminacy, defined it as "the ability of a piece to be performed in substantially different ways". POP Marble Run enables indeterminacy in music across a visual field, within which the marble is the chance element. In this way it is places visual form within the participants control but places the compositional potential outside it.
Execution
POP Marble Run is an interactive installation - an 8 metre long double-sided steel wall, activated through a toolkit of magnetic parts, which can be used to build custom marble runs by each participant. The wall is programmed with a spectrum of unique sounds, which are activated through an inbuilt speaker system as the marble drops from one section to the next - so each run is not only unique from a visual perspective but also creates a one-off sound composition.
Marbles are collected in a tray at the bottom of the wall and lifted back to the top with a custom designed lift mechanism. The structure has been designed as a series of modules which disassemble easily for transportation and storage.
Outcome
The result is a large participatory musical instrument activated by the people of Auckland. Disrupting their day-to-day routine with an unexpected experience. POP Marble Run saw over 10,000 people engage with it over a 2 week period.
