Background
Netflix released Rainbow, a new film born as a free interpretation of The Wizard of Oz with the concept: "This is not a movie, it's a journey."
Like a strange creature. Like an emerald. Like frogs. Like poison. Like hope. Rainbow talks about not having to be what others expect you to be.
The objective was to create a brand and launch a street campaign that would be both eye-catching and capture the ‘punk’ essence of the film.
Idea
We created a new brand and image for the film.
We made designs that could be interacted with, and vandalized later, in keeping with the spirit of the film.
We use different graphic techniques such as collage, graffiti and stencils, experimenting with photoluminescent inks, stickers, glitter, confetti and different materials on posters, canvases and billboards, giving them their own identity.
Execution
No piece was simply printed and put in place. All the graffiti was real: none was printed or simulated in the campaign.
We designed dreamlike posters with fine and sophisticated photographs against black so that the introduction of our own graffiti was clearly iconoclastic, irreverent and vandalous…. Our intention was no less than to subvert 'the beautiful' with our messages.
We did it in the same spirit as when we leave messages on any places for teenagers. Much of the graffiti also appeared within the work itself.
As a special action for the premiere, an entire train was commissioned and converted into a disco that took the guests to the film presentation party.
Outcome
The release of the film was a success, and gained great notoriety, thanks to the key art we created, which quickly became iconic.
By physically interacting with street posters and billboards, passersby joined and participated in the campaign.
Thanks to applied graphic arts, we succeeded in making a brand image for a film that transcended the medium itself and became a cultural icon.
And we also managed to take the 'punk' essence of the film beyond traditional formats, making each original artwork become a statement of intent of the film itself.
