Description

Reuters TV is a revolutionary video news app for the mobile age, designed to take full advantage of the immense untapped potential afforded by technology and design. It’s news for the Netflix age: individually relevant, on-demand, and up-to date.

The app dynamically assembles a seamless up-to-date news program of any length the user users, between 5-30 minutes. A personalization algorithm tweaks the content based on location and previous watching behaviour, and the program can be watched online or downloaded for offline viewing. It also offers live feeds with real-time coverage from around the globe. All content is produced exclusively for the service, giving editors and journalists the opportunity to tell stories and connect with users in a way previously impossible.

With a user interface that’s pared down to a minimum, the experience is immersive, beautiful and tailored for mobile devices.

Execution

Reuters TV is an innovation in both the gathering, production and distribution of video news, tailor-made for mobile age.

Editorial content is produced exclusively for Reuters TV, and draws upon our extraordinary reach. To deliver the service’s variable program lengths, all content is produced in multiple versions and organized by editorial teams in London, Hong Kong, New York and Washington DC, providing 24/7 coverage for viewers.

The ability to create personalized news programming while maintaining the production qualities of traditional television represents significant technical innovation by Reuters on iOS, Android, Web and OTT platforms. Programming is assembled on the device itself through novel application of AV Foundation and Core Animation frameworks and delivered via HTTP Live Streaming. All on-screen elements are also rendered on the device allowing for improved fidelity and different sizing across devices.

Outcome

As the app launches on more platforms its user base continues growing. In the last 12 months it grew tenfold, and in the fourth quarter of 2015 alone the number of active users tripled.

Engagement rates have increased consistently month-on-month — at 11 minutes a day for mobile and 15 minutes for Apple TV, they are among the highest in the industry. The app has received multiple nominations and awards (including Apple’s Top 25 Apps of 2015) and consistently enjoys very high ratings on the App Store and Google Play Store.

Reuters TV is a long-term wager by a company that’s been through multiple technological disruptions in its 265 year history.
