OVERVIEW

Execution

Approximately 75% of road accidents happen late at night. It's a common habit to take advantage of absence of traffic police then. Accidents increase significantly during New Year’s Eve and local festivals. Starting a few nights before New Year's Eve, mannequins dressed as traffic policemen were placed at key traffic junctions around Mumbai. The drivers, when at a distance, mistook the dummies for real traffic cops and automatically slowed down. As soon as they realised it’s a dummy, they were greeted with the message: ‘Traffic rules are for your safety. Obey them even in the absence of the law.’

Outcome

The number of incidents related to rash driving came down 45% and the people of Mumbai had a much safer New Year’s Eve.
