Description

Safari is a character-centric and technically ambitious animated spot that translates the aesthetics of a modern nature documentary to an arrestingly graphic and sculptural realm of colorful paint chips. The viewer is taken on a cinematic journey through a series of wildlife-centric vignettes, exploring the habitats of a mandrill, flamingos, zebras, meerkats, leopards, elephants and giraffes.

Execution

Safari employs a range of modeled and rigged animals that are animated to be both realistic and believable in their performance. However, there was also an overarching requirement that each animal also be sympathetic to the limits of their chip construction. The modelling, rigging and animation demands were substantial.

Our creatures don't wear a skin of paint chips, but are born of them. Every element had to feel authentic in assembly and interaction – grass looks and moves like grass, but also like paint chips. Similarly, while the animals look and move like their real-world counterparts, they are very much their own beings. Hours of research and debate were spent examining musculature, movement, environment and how to translate them to efficient and realistic rigs and models that work within the rules the paint-chip universe; pretty much everything you see in every frame is modeled, sculpted, textured and animated by hand.
