Background
Currently, over 430 million people worldwide live with some degree of hearing loss, and most of them can't fully experience media entertainment. These limitations lead to a lack of emotion and significant frustration for users while watching TV shows, movies, and series. As one of the most innovative and inclusive brands in the world, Samsung has taken a step forward to make it accessible for everyone to feel what they can't hear.
Idea
What if we could make 430 million people feel what they can't hear? That was the starting point for developing an innovative system that converts audio data into thousands of distinct vibration patterns. Pulse+ transforms Samsung smartphones and smartwatches into sound-sensing devices by synchronizing them with a SmartTV. From now on, watching movies and series will never be the same for millions of people. This brings wellness to the hearing impaired while watching entertainment, allowing them to experience the same enjoyment as everyone else.
Strategy
This work has been specifically designed for a particular target audience, and our strategy has been tailored to reach them in the most effective manner possible. We collaborated closely with deaf associations, allowing us to gain insights, test the technology, and gather valuable feedback directly from the target audience. Every step of the process was meticulously considered to ensure its relevance to their experience. Subsequently, we aim to spread the news to the entire hearing-impaired community, reaching every corner of the planet.
Execution
We've spent two years developing an innovative system that converts audio data into thousands of distinct vibration patterns. Every step of the process was undertaken in partnership with deaf associations, allowing us to gain insights, test the technology, and provide engineers with valuable feedback. Pulse+ transforms Samsung smartphones and smartwatches into sound-sensing devices by synchronizing them with a SmartTV. Once synced, every audio generates data for the system. The device's microphone captures this sound data, which is then mapped and classified by a machine-learning algorithm. This process provides a template of vibrations to be triggered, creating a unique experience for each type of sound. The global scale of this innovation is significant, as it relies only on Samsung smartphones or smartwatches, both of which are in the hands of millions worldwide.
Outcome
The impact is huge, as Pulse+ can reach over 1 billion Samsung smartphones and smartwatches, used by millions of hearing-impaired people worldwide. This transformative technology changes the behavior of these individuals while they enjoy entertainment, shifting from frustration and a sense of exclusion to an enjoyable and playful experience. It really changes completely the experience of watching movies and tv shows for hearing impaired people, as reported by everyone who already tried Pulse+. It also enhances the brand's perception in terms of innovation and inclusivity, aligning with the company's constant pursuit of these values.
